I lived in Croatia up until I was seven years old. I lived with my mom and grandparents. And in our household, it was usually my grandma that was cooking. She would often cook Serbian but also Mediterranean dishes like this one. The food was light, with lots of vegetables and not much meat.

Baked beans
How beautiful are these beans?! They are filling, without meat-which is always a plus for me! They go with everything-spring green leaf salads, pickles, yogurt, bread.. As a starter or a main dish. And they taste even better after a day or two!
Popara-poor peoples food
I remember first time I tried popara. It was at my aunts house in north Serbia. I was there for a few months, during which time she made it quite a few times for my cousins and me. Probably because I asked for it. I still remember how I was obsessed with it! 🙂
